2nd and 3rd Graders have been working on sight reading songs with Do, Re, Mi, So, and La and notating them on the staff.
After notating the song Pumpkin, Pumpkin, we added a bordun and an ostinato on orff instruments to perform the song.

First grade started off class by reading this poem: Once the students figured out that the poem was about a squirrel, we learned a song called "Chase the Squirrel" to work on mallet technique and direction of notes. Students also made up hand motions to go along with the song. 3rd grade created "Musical Clocks" by using notes that equal the times on the clock. What a great way to reinforce their knowledge of note values!
Welcome Back!!! Here is 3rd Grade performing a song on Orff instruments about the Golden Rule. Write a critique in the form of a newspaper article and share with [email protected].

Canons (also known as rounds) are fun to perform, especially when movements are added. The students have learned the definition of canon as: Two or more groups do the same thing but start at different times (we sing this as a chant). Here are a few clips of different canons performed by different grades. This first canon is shown in unison and then in two separate groups. (3rd Grade) Here is Cuckoo performed by 1st grade. In first grade, we use a variety of Orff Instruments and use the Kodaly singing method of using hand signs while singing. Here is a video of the students performing Taxi Taxi. This song is in ABA form with the A section being the melody and the B section being a rain storm created by instruments. Another song in ABA form is The Noble Duke of York. This song is performed with a partner dance. Shown below is the process of how we learned the song and then a performance. Kindergarten has been working on steady, rhythms, and musical terms. For steady beat, we do a lot of movement activities. This is a video of Johnny Works with One Hammer to get the students to internalize the pulse: As an intro to rhythms, we read a book called Freddie the Frog and the Mysterious Wahoo. We then used a smart board file to play around with different rhythms and then created our own rhythms out of pretzels. To learn the musical terms for slow (largo), and fast (presto), the kindergarteners sing along with this fun video and move at the appropriate tempos. |
