5th, 6th, and 7th graders are currently learning about jazz music. Students now know different jazz terms and are learning how to differentiate between the different styles of jazz music. Each student is also completing a presentation on a famous jazz musician/composer.
K-2 has been exploring the music of Camille Saint-Saens. Each week, we discuss a different movement of his wonder work The Carnival of the Animals. Week 1: The Aquarium Valentine Rondo
In 2nd and 3rd grade, we have been learning about rondo form: ABACADA… For the following song, we learned the A section on solfege and then performed it as a group dance with partners. We composed the B section as a class by finding out the rhythms based on the syllables in different valentine phrases. The class then worked in partners to create the remaining sections. Each group worked together to compose an 8 beat section and used conversation hearts as inspiration for their lyrics. At the end of class, we came together and performed a whole class rondo! An ostinato is a repeating pattern. Students watched this video to understand the concept: We broke down each ostinato and figured out the individual rhythms: Students then worked in groups to create their own ostinati. Here are a few of the final performances! Star Wars1st Graders completed these listening glyphs while listening to Duel of the Fates composed by John Williams. Students listened for the dynamics as well as different types of instruments to correctly color in the lightsabers. On the back, students composed their own piece like John Williams! Clap along with the Imperial March! Practice your rhythms in Rhythm Wars !
